K-3 Literacy Plan: Tools to use in Mileposts

We have implemented two approaches in Mileposts to assist districts and educators with meeting the needs of documenting literacy plans for all students who score poorly on literacy assessments.  One approach is to write an individual K-3 Literacy plan for a student and the other option is to embed the plan through the intervention template which is addressing the area of improvement.

Create an Individual K-3 Literacy Plan

First, find the student you want to create a K-3 Literacy Plan for.  Click on the student search link in the upper right hand corner. Enter the student name in the search field and then click the small arrow to search.

Click on the student name to enter their e-file.

Click on the Educational Support tab within the e-file.  Click on the Add Student Plan drop down.  Select the K-3 Literacy Plan.

Enter the Begin Date for the plan. Optionally add someone to notify or add to the plan team.  Click Save.

Scroll down in the Educational Support tab and click on the School Year to enter the K-3 Literacy Plan.

Once inside the plan you can Add Team Members, Add Interventions, Enter the Plan Summary data, Add Progress Monitors, Add Reviews, Add Attachments and Close the Plan.

To add a team member, click on Add Team Member.  Select the staff member, set their role and start and end dates. Click Save.

We have templates that can be leveraged in the Plan Summary section.  Click on Modify in the Plan Summary section.

You can either write your own Summary or Click on Templates to see the available templates.

Click on the K-3 Literacy folder, select the K-3 Reading Intervention template and click Insert.

Fill in the template and click Save.

See the following articles for Adding Interventions and Adding Progress Monitors.

Add Plan Approval - click on the Add Approval link in the Plan Approvals section. Enter the Approval Date, check if the plan was parent or student approved, click on the Narrative tab to enter notes and then click Save.

You can add notes or contacts in the Progress Notes, Contacts and Miscellaneous Notes section.  Add Plan reviews if desired.  Add any attachments in the attachments section. Close the plan when it is complete - see the Closing a Plan article.

Create a Group Intervention with the K-3 Literacy Plan Embedded

From any report or custom class list you can create a group intervention with the K-3 Literacy Plan embedded.

In the below example, we will create a Group K-3 Literacy Plan from an NWEA Common Core Reading report.

First, navigate to the report.  Click on Reports, search for Reading, click on the NWEA Map Reading report.

Sort the report by clicking on a column header to help you find those students at risk, then select the students to add to the Plan by clicking the checkbox next to their name.  Click the Action tab and choose Create Intervention.

Fill in the General and Intervention tabs.  See the Create a Group Intervention article for details.

On the Goals/Narrative tab, click on templates.

Click on the K-3 Literacy folder, select the K-3 Reading Intervention template and click Insert.

Fill in the Template and click Save once your Intervention documentation is complete.

Note: All info entered on this form needs to apply to all students in the group. However, once complete you can go into the individual students form and add individualized information if necessary.
