Using a Pretest to Build a Posttest

Using a Pretest to Build a Posttest

One of the best uses of edifyAssess occurs when teachers teach a concept, then give an assessment at the end of a lesson or a unit to assess what students learned, only to find that several students didn’t learn what they had hoped. As a result, the teacher reteaches the content, hopefully coming at the teaching differently than the first time through. When the teacher has finished the intervention, often they want to give a post assessment. Often teachers just make a quick create posttest choosing items from the edifyAssess item bank aligned to the standards on which students struggled.  But sometimes, teachers want to use the same items for a post test (or at least the items the students missed the first time through) to determine if the intervention worked.  Below are directions for doing that.
  1. Log into your edifyAssess account and open the class in which the assessment is you wish to build your posttest from.  If you are an administrator, log into your account.
  2. Click on Author Content.
  3. Drop down the Assessments tab in the blue tool bar at the top of the page to Search Assessments or click on search assessments underneath Create New Assessment at the bottom of the page.

  1. Once you open the search feature, use part of the name of the assessment to find the test you wish to use.  Click search.

  1. Depending on how many assessments you have with the key word in the title, either one more assessments will appear. Click on the ID # for the assessment.

  1. The assessment will load. Click on Copy near the top of the page. It will ask you if you want to copy the test.  Click OK. Then it will tell you that a copy of the assessment has been created successfully.  Click OK.

  1. You are now in a copy of the original assessment.  First, rename the assessment. Click on Edit and enter a new name, possible Algebraic Expressions Posttest and then click Save.

  1. Now, edit the assessment. On the right-hand side there is a Remove link. If you want to get rid of an item - click Remove. (Please use the remove option carefully as you must start over if you accidentally remove the wrong item.) The edit button will allow you to change the characteristics or the alignment, but not the text of the question.  Click Save after each change.

  1. If you want to add already existing item or create new items, go to the top portion of the page and click on the option you wish to use. See below. Directions for each option are available.

  1. Once you have completed all the changes you wish to make, click Save.  Then click Publish.
