Class Load
Why Class Load
Class Load was created to provide a weighting metric for teaching a given class based on size of class, age of students, and what plans or programs students are enrolled in. This weighting metric is used to define the difficulty level of individual students and classes as a whole. All Class Load Factors default to one. All these Factors can be adjusted as per the districts administrators, creating a district level standard. A Factor less than 1 equates to less work, greater potential for student learning, and an easier teaching experience. A Factor greater than one equates to more work, less potential for student learning, and a more difficult teaching experience.
Class Load is useful to help administration better understand teacher success/student improvement or why a class is experiencing difficulty that may result in minimal student improvement. Taking these factors into account could help determine where aids are needed, how to balance classes to equally distribute the load, or which teachers are really making a difference and which teachers may need additional support.
The first step to using the class load feature is configuring the weightings of various programs, interventions, class sizes, etc. This is a vital step to ensuring the correct weight calculation. These values may be tweaked at any time and changes will have immediate effect on reports. No load value is allowed to be below 0.01 but the upper value is not limited.
Set up
Log in to Milepost as an Administrator
Click Admin
Click District Setup
Click Class Load Setup
Note: Any changes made on this screen must be saved before exiting or all changes will be lost. Save changes buttons can be found at the top and bottom of page.
Class load can be:
Disabled
Enabled for district administrators only
Enabled for all users
Note: All Load Factor values on this screen default to 1 but can be changed as the district feels appropriate by typing in the cells or using the up down arrows.
Class size multiplies
a. Class sizes are set in increments of ten percent by default
b. Class size groups can be edited by clicking the Pencil
c. Class size groups can be deleted by clicking the X
d. Class sizes groups can be added in custom size ranges. If you add a new group the weightings for the groups around the new group will be used to calculate the weightings for the new group. Groups may not overlap nor can there be gaps between 0 and (max).
e. Student age groups are fixed and cannot be adjusted
f. Class size group Load Factors can be set by the district as they feel appropriate by typing in the cell or using the up and down arrows.
Plans
b. If the plan has a check mark in a green circle under “Annual Plan” this means that the plan expires annually. All other plans carry forward from year to year.
c. The Load Factor is set to 1 by default but can be set by the district as they feel appropriate by typing in the cell or using the up and down arrows.
d. Plan Load Factors can be reset to 1.00 by clicking the Reset button next to the desired Plan.
Programs
b. If the Program has a checkmark in a green circle under Detailed Tracking this means that it is tracked by Milepost by default. All others are synced from your district’s SIS system and are reported, but not managed, in Mileposts.
c. The Load Factor is set to 1 by default but can be set by the district as they feel appropriate by typing in the cell or using the up and down arrows.
d. Program Load Factors can be reset to 1.00 by clicking the Reset button next to the desired Program.
Don’t forget to save after making changes. Note that the more items you change, the longer it will take to save. Changing all Load Factors may take up to 30 seconds to save.

Currently this is the only report that shows Student and Class Load.
Choose a class
The load for an individual Student is defined as the largest Load Factor for each student in any category (the load factors are not averaged).
Note that teachers can only see the class load final value and not the individual student load. Individual student load values are only shown to users with the DOMAIN SETUP permission.
No individual student’s load value is allowed to be below 1.00.
The class Load Calculation is calculated by averaging the maximum Load Factor per student, multiplied by a factor determined by class size and grade level. If a class has students at multiple grade levels, then the multiplication factor will be the average of the values for the class size at each grade level (note that the actual number of students in each grade level is not taken into account for the multiplication factor).
